Why Write A Book?
Is writing a book on your bucket list? If it isn’t, maybe it should be.
There are plenty of reasons why you should write a book. It might be to realize a longstanding dream of publishing your own work. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to see your name in print. Perhaps you feel your story is something the world needs to hear. All these goals are valid, but there are many more reasons why you should consider picking up that pen.
Sometimes people ask me if they’ll make any money with their book. Often this is a question that comes up when they are considering whether my services are worth the investment. This is a tricky question for which there is not a straightforward answer.
All aspiring writers dream of having a bestseller that makes them lots of money. And while this is always a possibility, it often comes down to timing and luck. You can have a compelling story and a beautifully written script but if the market is saturated with similar themes or subject matter, your book might be overlooked. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write. Nor does it mean you won’t make any money if that is your goal.
For example, if you run your own business or offer a specialized service and want to be recognized as a subject matter expert within your industry, writing a book is a great way of achieving this. It’s a way of promoting yourself and your business and setting yourself apart from the crowd.
Have a story you think might benefit others? Writing a book is a way to share your message with a broader audience than you would otherwise reach. It can be a way of sharing valuable information and useful resources that might not be easily accessible to the general public or specific target audiences.
When potential clients ask me if their book will make money, I tell them I don’t know. But I also tell them to focus on the long game. Writing a book is an investment. And it’s one people seldom regret.
There are a lot of tangible and intangible benefits to writing a book, so don’t underestimate the value of the story that’s within you.
